Description
Trichocereus ‘Lumberjack × Psycho0’
Overview
This hybrid joins two respected bridgesii-lineage clones: Lumberjack and Psycho0. Created by Misplant, the cross brings together the strong, upright character of Lumberjack with the refined blue tones and spine form of Psycho0. At GCG, we selected this individual for its balanced proportions, appealing glaucous coloration, and large, well-defined spines.
Parentage and Origin
Lumberjack was discovered in Sacramento, California, around 2001, reportedly found at a local hardware store. It is considered a bridgesii-type hybrid, recognized for its thick columns, consistent growth, and blue-green skin. Psycho0, in contrast, traces back to Australian collections, originally from Cactus Country, and was named in honor of a late community member. The Psycho0 lineage is known for its clear blue-green tone, pronounced ribs, and strong spination, which have made it a classic among Trichocereus growers.
Selection at GCG
From each seed batch, we typically retain only a single plant—sometimes the only one that survives early growth. This simple practice allows natural resilience to guide the selection process. The chosen individual from this hybrid stood out for its strong form, healthy color, and symmetrical spine development. The result is a plant that expresses both vigor and visual balance, combining the durability of Lumberjack with the refined character of Psycho0.
Growth and Appearance
The plant develops upright columns with subtle glaucous bloom and well-spaced ribs. Its spines are large, ranging from golden to brownish tones that contrast nicely with the blue-green epidermis. As it matures, it forms a sculptural presence that reflects both its hybrid heritage and careful selection.
Cultivation Notes
Like most bridgesii-lineage hybrids, this plant prefers full sun, excellent drainage, and moderate watering during the active season, with reduced water in winter. It adapts well to containers or open ground in frost-free climates. Under proper care, it grows steadily and rewards the collector with strong visual traits that improve with age.
About Psycho0
1. Origins & dedication
The ‘Psycho0’ clone has a deeply sentimental origin. Sourced initially from Cactus Country in Strathmerton, Victoria (Australia), it was dedicated to a young SAB (Succulent & Agave of the Barrier) community member known as Psycho0 who passed prematurely. Trichocereus UK+3trichocereus.net+3Cactus AF+3 The cactus community embraced this gesture by distributing the clone widely in his memory, ensuring that his name continues on in collections worldwide. The Corroboree+3Trichocereus UK+3Cactus AF+3 Over the years, ‘Psycho0’ has gained recognition not only for its emotive backstory, but for its strong visual and structural attributes.
2. Botanical & taxonomic lineage
‘Psycho0’ is typically categorized under Trichocereus bridgesii / Echinopsis lageniformis—a species native to Bolivia with strong garden appeal. Cactus AF+3Wikipedia+3trichocereus.net+3 The species E. lageniformis (synonym T. bridgesii) is also known in the cactus world as the Bolivian Torch or bridgesii group. Trichocereus UK+3Wikipedia+3Trichocereus UK+3 In cactus-collector databases, Trichocereus “Psycho0” is listed among the named clones of the bridgesii/laginiformis lineage. Cactus AF+1 Its form, spine structure, and growth habit reflect classic bridgesii traits while offering a unique aesthetic signature.
3. Historical & ethnobotanical timeline (San Pedro / related cacti & mescaline context)
While ‘Psycho0’ itself is a more modern clone, it belongs to a broader family of columnar cacti historically tied to ritual, ethnobotany, and psychoactive alkaloid studies. The San Pedro cactus complex (Echinopsis pachanoi / macrogonus varieties, etc.) has documented use dating back millennia. In the Guitarrero Cave (Peru), remains of related San Pedro cacti dated to ~ 6,800–6,200 BCE have been found. (Note: ‘Psycho0’ is rarely used for formal biochemical assays, but as part of the bridgesii group it carries the same lineage and potential.)
4. Distinctive traits & collector appeal
What sets ‘Psycho0’ apart are its signature visual hallmarks: vivid blue-green (glaucous) stem color, strong contrast, and bold spines. Trichocereus UK+3greencandygenetics.com+3trichocereus.net+3 The clone is often noted for having three powerful long yellow spines per areole, a spine configuration that gives it a dramatic, sculptural presence. greencandygenetics.com+3Trichocereus UK+3trichocereus.net+3 Beyond aesthetics, its stability as a clone, its popularity (wide distribution among hobbyists), and its use in hybridization all contribute to its appeal. greencandygenetics.com+4Cactus AF+4trichocereus.net+4 Collectors often prize these attributes as desirable for both display and breeding.
5. Cultivation
‘Psycho0’ thrives under standard bridgesii / columnar cactus care: full to bright light (gradually acclimated), very well-draining soil mixes (pumice, grit, perlite), deep but infrequent watering (allow to dry between cycles), and frost protection in cold climates. Its moderate-to-fast growth (especially in tip-cut or grafted forms) makes it a rewarding specimen
